Calories: How to correctly interpret GoBe measurements

Healbe GoBe automatically determines the number of calories digested. Using the FLOW ™ technology and the bioimpedance sensor, GoBe evaluates the dynamics of the intercellular fluid, which is associated with the glucose and basic nutrients intake throughout the day and uses this information to calculate the calories consumed.


How food is digested

Digestion time varies between individuals and depends on many factors, such as specificity of metabolism, previous meal, physical activity, health condition, taking medicines and nutritional supplements, etc. GoBe captures calories at a time when it's absorbed by the body, at the stage of nutrient get into the blood.

The digestion process takes a time:

1-2 hours - the process of chewing and swallowing

3-4 hours - the handling of food by digestive fluids

4-8 hours - digestion process

5-9 hours, and sometimes more than 24 hours - food is delivered to the suction area and enters the blood.

Some of these processes occur simultaneously, so the first portion of digested food may enter the blood after 15-30 minutes, and the main part of the incoming food - only after 3-4 hours, while the absorption period can be superimposed on the next meal. Depending on the composition of the products, 90% of the eaten can appear in the blood as after 1 hour (sweet, sugar) and after 9-10 hours (complex dishes with meat and garnish).

Be careful! GoBe should be turned on and have good contact with the skin all the time until the food enter the blood. Otherwise, the error of its calculations can greatly increase. Since GoBe algorithms evaluate the entire array of received data integrally, an error both in the direction of decreasing and in the direction of increasing calories is possible.

The night time digestion

Despite the processes in the body slow down while sleeping, digestion can continue. Thus, even if the last meal was at 6 pm, at 6-7 am the digestion process may continue. At this point, to improve the accuracy of calculations, we ask you not to remove the bracelet at night, when you sleep.

The previous meal impact

The digestion process for one standard meal takes 3 to 8 hours on average. If you had an enormous meal, the digestion will not end with the next meal. And two processes are superimposed on each other. Thus the second meal can slow down digestion in connection with some depletion of digestive resources of an organism.

How the digestion is affected by physical activity

Eating habits and individual characteristics of the organism

The speed of digestion depends on genetic capabilities and habits. Some people do not digest certain types of nutrients (lactose, gluten, etc.). If the meal is unusually complex or is simply more than usual, some of the nutrients may not be digested.

In these cases, GoBe will only show part of the calories that have entered the blood, i.e. were really digested by the body.

Overall health condition

If your body’s temperature is raised, immune processes in the body become more active, chemical reactions flow faster, as a result, the intensity of metabolism increases. If your body’s temperature is less than 36.6, the processes in the body are sluggish, chemical reactions occur more slowly, as a result, the intensity of metabolism decreases.

GoBe algorithms are tuned for normal nutrient consumption and normal blood supply, so as in an increase and as in a decrease in body temperature, the error in calories intake readings increases. At the moment, the states with a changed body temperature are restrictions for the use of GoBe, since the measurement error in such states can substantially increase.

The emotional state

Pain, stress, fatigue, illness affect the speed of movement and the intake of nutrients into the blood.
