Healbe GoBe: keep track of your heart

In the rhythm of the heart, one can tell a lot about your health and the emotional state and the effectiveness of the daily physical activity. It would seem that this physiological parameter is straightforward enough, but it is not so easy to measure it in real time. In this case, only fitness tracker may help. 

Do you remember how we were taught to measure heart rate afield? We turned on the stopwatch, put a finger on the pulsating artery – the carotid or the artery on the wrist - and counted the blood pushes for a minute. Tonometers which measure heart rate at rest work on the same principles. Both of these methods are not suitable for heart rate monitoring 24/7. In this case, we must immediately dismiss the first method while the second one causes considerable discomfort since a person can endure the pressure on the artery for a few minutes, not for the whole day.

Modern fitness trackers offer their versions of the heart rate measurement, which can evaluate the work of your heart with a certain level of uncertainty.

Analysis of the electrical rhythm of the heart. According to its mechanism, this method of measurement is similar to the ECG procedure, but with fewer sensors. Since ECG records an electrical signal only, which is not always accompanied by heart contractions, the ECG is not able to record cases of admissions of such reductions necessary to evaluate the state of the user. The authenticity of such measurements may be accurate enough, but it is not convenient to use such devices on continuing basis. These sensors are fixed with the straps on the chest in the region of the heart. The common examples of such sensors are a Polar band or a Garmin band. In practice, they are used only by professional athletes, who need to monitor the heart work with a high degree of precision during exercises. 

Optical sensors measurements. A device passes light wave through the blood vessels and detects the blood rhythm in wave reflections. In practice, accurate readings are possible only on condition that the person is at rest and the skin surface is perfectly clean. Why? Because perspiration, tan, body hair and muscle contractions may distort the light refraction and, therefore, pervert the results of measurement. Moreover, the LEDs built into these trackers are a heavy user of energy. Thus, such trackers are used only in the course of exercises, and they should be activated individually.

Healbe GoBe offers an alternative way to estimate a heart rate at rest with minimal error. When estimating this parameter, the device uses a piezo pressure sensor that detects changes in the blood pressure on the vessel walls. This allows most accurately determine a person's heart rate at rest and its change in moderate physical activity throughout the day. Also, this design saves energy as the Healbe GoBe bracelet battery works up to two days constantly estimating the heart rate. When measuring the pulse rate of motion, Healbe GoBe similar to other optical sensors in the wrist devices has an inaccuracy that is individual for a user features or the exercise.

Before using the device for heart rate measurements, a user fills out the user’s profile in the application and specifies their heart rate value at rest.

In this case, it is important to estimate this value adequately. We recommend specifying the average daily value of the heart rate at rest in user’s profile. To estimate it one should stop in the middle of the day, get calm and relaxed and then estimate their pulse rate per minute. The lower the value is, the better. The heart rate shows the health of your cardiovascular system (except for some diseases in which the heart works in a worsened mode affecting body's needs for oxygen and nutrients). A trained heart needs fewer contractions to provide the body with all the necessary. 

It is important to note that one’s heart rate at rest should gradually decline with regular exercises. Do not forget to update its value in the application. We recommend to do it weekly.

For now, our R&D team is working on making the procedure of filling and updating the user profile and updating easier or even automatic. Initially, the application estimates a heart rate value at rest by user's gender and age. Then, as wearing the bracelet, the application adjusts this indicator depending on the measurements of the heart rate in a state of relative immobility. During the day, there are enough numbers of such pauses to dial the desired number of heart rate measurements by pulse wave and display this value correctly in the user profile.

How Healbe GoBe indicates the pulse changes

When using the Healbe GoBe bracelet, you can monitor a heart rate in real time. To see the values, repeatedly press the button on the bracelet case. Each press is accompanied by a certain sign on the display. Press until the word “Pulse” appears. Next to it you can see the heart rate values, which change every 5 seconds. Also, the application indicates the average heart rate, i.e., the average value in 5 minutes, as well as an indication of the minimum and maximum heart rate of the day.


Importantly, as well as other sensors that estimate a pulse wave, Healbe GoBe susceptible to interference caused by the movements of arms on which it is worn. In other words, while running, vibration or other activities the pulse measurements are not very accurate. However, as soon as an interference disappears the device gives the correct heart rate value in 5-10 seconds.

The heart rate values at rest and during exercise of any intensity, middle or high, as well as immediately after them are the important indicators of the health of one’s cardiovascular system. To control these parameters constantly it is important to know how the pulse changes during the day. The Healbe GoBe application provides its users with such opportunity. Using section “Heart”, you see the daily changes in heart rate chart based on the mean heart rate values collected with 5-minutes intervals during the day.

With regular training, you clearly see how your endurance increases. Control your heart rate and eventually change your lifestyle, in general, a training schedule, in particular. Of course, such changes should be done under the supervision of a professional trainer and/or your family doctor.
